After years of waiting, Ferrol will have an important workload for its shipyards. One month before the election on April 28, the Council of Ministers approved the execution order of the five frigates of the F-110 series in the public company Navantia. Its construction will enable the city, in which the unemployment rate has reached 25% in the hardest years of the crisis, to generate some 7,000 stable jobs in the next decade.
For the cutting of sheet metal it will still be necessary to wait. The next step will be to sign the contract with Navantia as the company in charge of materializing the five units. As explained by the Government delegate, the first frigate will be delivered, in accordance with the established provisions, in 2026. The last one will depart from the Ría Ferrolana in 2031.
The frigates f-110 will be polyvalent escorts of 145 meters in length and 18 meters in width. They will have a displacement around 6200 tons, will reach a maximum speed of more than 26 knots and will be able to accommodate 150 people, with room for an additional 40.
